Christology

  1. Jesus Christ is unique. He has always been God, and when He came to the earth, He became man. He was 100% God, and 100% man--two natures combined in one person. This doctrine is called the Hypostatic Union.

  2. The Humanity of Jesus Christ.

    1. Jesus had a human mother. (Matt. 1:18)

    2. Jesus grew in wisdom and stature just as any other human child. (Lk.2:40; 2;52)

    3. Jesus had the appearance of a man. (John 20:15)

    4. Jesus was subject to physical desires and weaknesses.

      1. He hungered. (Matt. 4:2)

      2. He thirsted. (John 19:28)

      3. He became tired. (Matt. 8:24)

      4. He sorrowed. (John 11:35)

      5. He became angry. (Matt. 21:12-13)

  3. The Deity of Jesus Christ

    1. Jesus is called God. (John 1:1)

    2. Jesus is called the Lord. (Acts 4:33)

    3. Jesus is called the Son of God. (Mark 1:1)

    4. Jesus possesses the attributes of God

      1. Jesus is eternal. He was "in the beginning." (John 1:1; 8:58)

      2. Jesus had authority over death. (John 5:21)

      3. Jesus is immutable. (Heb. 13:8)

      4. The very nature of God is resident in Jesus. (Col. 2:9) Because of this, the Lord was incapable of sinning (the doctrine of Christ's impeccability). His perfect holiness prevented Him from succumbing to temptation.

      5. Jesus is omnipotent. (Matt. 28:18)

      6. Jesus is omniscient. (John 16:30)

  4. Jesus Christ was born of a virgin.

    1. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Ghost. (Luke 1:35)

    2. The virgin birth made possible Jesus' sinless nature. (Romans 5)

  5. The Substitutionary Death of the Lord Jesus Christ

    1.  Jesus died to satisfy God's wrath. (Rom. 3:25)

    2. We are reconciled to God through the death of Christ. (Rom. 5:10)

    3.  Jesus died in our place to pay for our sins. (Isa. 53:6; I Pet. 2:24)

    4. Jesus' death was for the sins of the entire world. (I John 2:2)

  6.  The Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ

    1. Jesus' resurrection is the cornerstone of our faith. (I Cor. 15:17)

    2. Jesus' resurrection demonstrated His deity. (Rom. 1:4) Also compare John 2:19 with Rom. 6:4. In the first reference, Jesus said, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." In the second reference we find that Jesus was raised from the dead "by the glory of the Father ."

    3. Jesus' resurrection proved that His sacrifice was accepted by the Father. (Rom. 4:25)

    4. Jesus' resurrection was a bodily, physical resurrection. (Matt. 28:6; John 20:1, 2)

    5. Jesus' resurrection assures believers that we will be accepted by God. (Rom. 4:25)

  7. After His resurrection, Jesus ascended into Heaven, and will someday return to claim His Bride (the Church), and to establish His kingdom here on Earth. (Acts 1:9-11; Heb. 9:21-24; Rev. 20) Today, the Lord Jesus acts as our Advocate before the Father (1 John 2:1) .
